J-Terms

  • Church of the Cross 8140 Exchange Drive Austin, TX, 78754 United States (map)

We are becoming a people transformed into the image of Christ. A J-Term (or January-Term) provides space for us to engage areas where we long to see God’s transformation.

Select a course, and you will meet with others at the church building over that topic for 4 Thursdays in January (7-8:15PM), and then all J-Terms join together to pray Compline in the sanctuary (8:15-8:30PM). Because J-Terms represent more of a “sprint” in our life together, there are expectations of weekly readings and a commitment to be present. Register HERE!

Details of each course are below, including any special notes! Childcare will not be provided. Please register for only one course.

God of the Stranger

Led by Rev. Kimberly Deckel

Extending care and hospitality to the foreigner is a recurring theme in Scripture, and it's one of COTC's areas of presence in missions. In this J-term we’ll engage Scripture, practice listening, and cultivate curiosity as we consider God's invitation to join Him in caring for immigrants and refugees among us. There will also be an opportunity to participate in a service project on 1/15, creating hygiene bags for our mission partner, Hope Clinic, who primarily serves immigrants and refugees.

Please note: Rather than meeting on 1/8, we will meet on 1/11 following the 11 am service. This time will be led by Cindy Wu, an expert and faithful practitioner in the field. Our primary resource for J-term will be this guide from World Relief.

Listening to God-With-Us

Led by Karen Walker

We want and need to hear the voice of Jesus. In these four weeks, we will engage in reading, conversation, and practice to expand our awareness of God's presence, grow in our ability to engage with Him, and gain a vision for the community's pivotal role in our ability to listen.
*Note: Please purchase our primary reading, Joyful Journey. If that is cost-prohibitive, email Mtr. Sarah and we'll make a way!

The Book of Ruth

Led by Lindsay Olesburg & Drew Smith

What does it mean to be faithful in a faithless world? The book of Ruth paints a vivid picture of redemptive relationships and God’s provision amid displacement in a hostile world.  It explores themes of finding home after loss, the power of kindness and commitment, and how the care of God enables us to treat each other well.  We’ll be using Manuscript Bible Study, a life giving process of engaging the Scripture together marked by careful thinking, robust discussion, and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.

Sacred Work

Led by Dr. Clifton & Lindsey Stringer + Austin Center for Faith & Work Staff

Most people will spend a third of their lives at work. What's it look like to align our work with God's purposes, especially when our daily work lives feel fraught? What difference can it make for us and others when we exercise faith? Come explore these questions and more with others in our community.

Servants of the Secret Fire

Led by Jonathan Berger

The works of famed fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien contain many themes relevant to the Christian life. Creation, brokenness, fellowship, hope, and healing permeate the stories he created, inspiring generations of readers since the release of The Hobbit in 1937.

Whether you’re new to the world of Tolkien or are a lifelong fan, this J-Term offers an accessible space to discuss and explore ideas, context and language from the world of Middle Earth and beyond.
