“Love takes time. And the one thing a person in a hurry doesn’t have is time.”

Bp. Emeritus Todd Hunter, quoting Eugene Peterson

Slow me down

Slow me down

“Slow Me Down” by The Porter’s Gate

There is not very much in our modern world that encourages gentleness (not to be confused with indulgence, which is a tempting substitute!). There is not much that encourages us to slow to the pace of sincere and sustaining love.

That is part of the reason I look forward to our Annual Parish Retreat each year. It pulls me out of a particular pace. It bears the gift of disruption.

In the wake of that disruption, there is delight. Well, I say “delight”, but what I really mean is fun. Every year I have fun at Parish Retreat.

It is fun to spend time with each other.

It is fun to play trivia and worship together.

It is fun to see what God reveals in Scripture.

It is fun to eat, to share, to pray together in time set apart for nothing else.

I love that we are a community whose rooting in Christ shows up in play and presence. It takes faith to extricate ourselves from busyness and laugh. To pull away and greet new faces and ask questions that would otherwise be ignored over the demands of the day. To allow ourselves to be tended to by God and one another.

Come have fun at Parish Retreat this year. Do not let money be the reason you aren’t at Retreat - scholarships are available.

I’ll see you there.
