If only that was the question children asked!
This Sunday is All Saints Day, where we honor and celebrate the mystical communion of the saints. We remember saints throughout history, women and men whose devotion to Jesus gave a particular radiance that illuminates our own understanding of God. If you are interested in learning more about some of these folks, might I commend these three easy and beautifuloptions.
On All Saints, we also welcome new saints into this communion through the sacrament of baptism!
In preparation for Sunday, consider a few practices:
First, pray for those preparing to be baptized. We will celebrate the baptism of 9 children - pray for the love of God to sink deeply within them through the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Second, let us remember our own baptismal vows. The candidates themselves or those presenting littles for baptism will affirm faith through a series of questions and answers.
As is true of all vows, it is easy to forget them, minimize their totalizing nature, or lay them aside entirely in the crucible of life. The Lord is merciful to remind us, and receive us afresh. Reflecting on these vows, how might the Lord deepen your “yes” to Him and strengthen your “no” to lesser powers and affections?
Do you renounce the devil and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God?
I renounce them.
Do you renounce the empty promises and deadly deceits of this world that corrupt and destroy the creatures of God?
I renounce them.
Do you renounce the sinful desires of the flesh that draw you from the love of God?
I renounce them.
Do you turn to Jesus Christ and confess him as your Lord and Savior?
I do.
Do you joyfully receive the Christian Faith, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments?
I do.
Will you obediently keep God’s holy will and commandments, and walk in them all the days of your life?
I will, the Lord being my helper.
With joy in you saints,
Sarah+
