This Sunday we celebrate the sacrament of baptism. All will be prompted: “Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ?”

To this we will, with great volume, proclaim, “We will!”

But what does that mean?

The texture and specifics of the answer will have to do with God’s gracious calling to each of us. It is a commitment uniquely lived in each season.

For one, it means we pray.

We carry with us a reminder that we are inextricably linked to our Christ-family, and that our prayers for these members carry a power outside of us. We trust in what God has done for them, and we hold hope on their behalf for Christ’s renewal of all things.

It also means we contribute to the spiritual health and vitality of our community. We participate in an ecosystem that is designed to support them in their life in Christ!

An ecosystem where faith, hope, and love grow wildly. Where weeds are checked, and roses are pruned. Where water is fresh and “biodiverse” expressions of the Spirit bring vibrancy and stability.

One of the most profound ways we can support these persons is by living into our own vows, nurturing a healthy, self-giving ecosystem in the way of Jesus.

As the candidates and their sponsors are called to repentance and faith - to renounce, to put away, and to affirm, to take up - may our own vows be renewed. May the Spirit, with all joy and tenderness, invite us in fresh ways to be gospel groundskeepers for the sake of others.

Peace,

Sarah+
